Cloud Migration for Private Users

Introduction

More and more people are using cloud services to store their data, such as photos, documents, contacts, and appointments, online. Major providers like Google, Microsoft, and Apple make this very easy and convenient.

However, their legal requirements in the countries of their headquarters lead to great risks, which ultimately mean that my data can be viewed and forwarded without restriction by foreign government organizations without my consent and without a corresponding legal basis in my country of residence.

Therefore, it is worth considering a secure open-source cloud environment, such as Nextcloud. This solution gives you full control over your data, protects your privacy, helps you apply important Digital Principles, and offers many practical features.

Benefits of an open-source cloud environment like Nextcloud

✅ Full control over your own data through trusted providers or self-hosting

✅ Highest security thanks to regular updates and transparency of the code

✅ Data protection according to Swiss or European standards

✅ No hidden ads or unwanted data usage

✅ Future-proofing and support from a large developer and user community

☺️ With the help of a secure open-source cloud, you can exercise your Digital Self-Determination and protect your data.

Disadvantages of Google, Microsoft, and Apple clouds

❌ Data is stored on foreign servers, with foreign legislation that supports the release and forwarding of your data even if your data is in a data center in your home country

❌ No full control over one's own data and their use

❌ Privacy settings are complicated and transparent

❌ Apps and services can use personal data for advertising

❌ Risk of dependence due to lack of open exchange standards

☹️ No digital sovereignty, intransparent data usage, high dependence on providers

Migration paths for private users

Situation 1: I use Google Drive and want more privacy

Your challenge:

🔹Photos and documents are stored on Google

🔹Theoretically, Google sees everything (and can give US authorities access)

🔹You want to reduce the risk

Your migration path:

Your benefit:

✅ Data is located in CH/EU, not in the USA/UK

✅ No CLOUD Act risk (also see Part 3 of our Secure Cloud Blog)

✅ Real end-to-end encryption possible

✅ Full control, open source, auditable

Situation 2: I am a tech expert and want to run everything myself

Your challenge:

🔹I don't trust cloud provider (not even European or Swiss ones)

🔹I want 100% control

🔹I have a server or Raspberry Pi at home

Your migration path:

Your benefit:

✅ 100% data control, 100% Digital Self-Determination

✅ Learning Effect: I understand cloud infrastructure better

✅ Hobbyist satisfaction: You run your own cloud

✅ You can make it available to others (family, friends)

Situation 3: I want to change only a little, but save some data

Your challenge:

🔹I'm not ready to switch completely

🔹But: I want to locally back up some critical data (identification cards, contracts, photos)

🔹Minimal complexity desired

Your migration path (hybrid-light):

Secure Cloud - Minimal Migration

Your benefit:

✅ Critical data is not stored with US/UK companies

Digital Self-Determination + Security without much effort

✅ Little change in daily life

✅ Anytime expandable

Checklist: Should I switch to Open Source Cloud (Nextcloud)?

🔲 I care about data protection (photos, diary, intimate data) → YES

🔲 I value Digital Self-Determination (photos, diary, intimate data) → YES

🔲 I'm willing to invest 30 minutes for setup → YES

🔲 I live in Switzerland or Germany → YES (CLOUD Act risk relevant)
